Mechanism of Action:

The Sóstó medicinal water is proven to be therapeutic in a double-blind trial for chronic musculoskeletal disorders. Based on its chemical composition, it is a sodium-chloride (salty), hydrogen-carbonate, iodine-bromine water. The characteristic of salt waters is that they adhere strongly to the skin, thus exerting their anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting effects. Due to its exfoliating effect, it can also be recommended for dermatological disorders.

Besides the above effects derived from its inorganic mineral composition, the water's physical properties are beneficial to the human body and can be well-utilized in medicine.

  • state: due to its liquid state, it surrounds the body submerged in water from all sides. The flow of water stimulates the skin.
  • hydrostatic pressure: increases the circulating blood volume within the blood vessels. Thanks to the water pressure exerted on the body, blood is pumped back into circulation from the veins of the skin, subcutaneous tissues, and superficial muscles, thereby increasing the quantity of blood the heart pumps into the arterial system per minute, known as cardiac output. However, neither heart rate nor blood pressure rises, and experience even shows a reduction in blood pressure. This effect of submersion is utilized in the rehabilitation of heart patients. Urinary excretion also increases, providing a diuretic effect.
  • buoyancy: makes certain movements easier.
  • temperature: water at 34-36 degrees is perceived as warm. Warm water relaxes muscles, increasing blood flow to the skin and muscles.

Immersion is when the body is submerged in water in a vertical position up to substernal height (neck-deep). The physiological changes caused by immersion are based on three physical factors: hydrostatic pressure, buoyancy, temperature, and are greatly determined by the duration of stay in water. These variables are triggered by both mineral and regular tap water. Added to this is the chemical effect due to the mineral content dissolved in the water. Balneotherapy favorably influences the antioxidant system and reduces harmful free radical levels.

Treatment Procedure:

The recommended duration of stay in the medicinal water pool: 20 minutes, which can be repeated after a short rest period.

Indications:

Musculoskeletal diseases: degenerative diseases of the spine, such as disc bulging, disc herniation, wear-related changes of the hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, soft tissue disorders, symptomatic therapy in inactive stages of inflammatory joint diseases, post-operative care for orthopedic surgeries, rehabilitation after trauma surgeries.
